After punching their ticket to Williamsport on a walk off win in the Great Lakes Regional championship game, the Hagerstown Little League team won their first game at the Little League World Series in very similar fashion. Hagerstown beat an Iowa team 8-7 thanks to an error in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on first and second and one out, Jaykob Troutwine hit a ground ball to the shortstop. After stepping on second, the shortstop’s throw to first sailed over the first basemen’s head and Preston Allred came around to score the winning run. The late-game drama came after Hagerstown jumped out to a 7-1 lead. They immediately gave it back in the third and fourth inning thanks to six unanswered runs from Iowa. The next opponent for the Indiana team is not yet determined, but they’ll play next on Monday afternoon.
The NTT IndyCar Series heads to the St. Louis area this weekend for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 in Madison, Illinois. The season’s final oval race will take place at the World Wide Technology Raceway where Josef Newgarden has won the last two races. Newgarden has dominated the oval as of late as part of his impressive run at ovals the last few seasons. A mechanical failure stopped him from winning both races in Iowa on a weekend where he was clearly the fastest. Newgarden is one of 10 drivers who can still mathematically take home the series championship in mid-September. Heading into the weekend, Will Power holds a slim, 6-point advantage over Scott Dixon with Marcus Ericsson, Newgarden and Alex Palou rounding out the top five in the season long points race. The Bommarito Automotive Group 500 green flag will wave under the lights around 6:00pm on Saturday evening.
