An Indiana Little League team is going to Williamsport for the Little League World Series. A team from Hagerstown beat North Laurel Little League from London, Kentucky 4-3 in extra innings on Thursday. They are the first team from Indiana to make it the Little League World Series since 2012. Graham Vinson delivered the game winning hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning after Hagerstown escaped a bases loaded jam in the top of the frame. The team will represent the Great lakes Region in Williamsport in the annual Little League spotlight. The 75th edition of the Little League World Series begins on Wednesday.
Mike Renfro led Beech Grove boys basketball to a 3A state championship. On Sunday, he was arrested in Henry County and suspended from his teaching and coaching positions. The 45-year-old coach faces two felony charges — one for dealing cocaine between one and five grams and another for possession of cocaine. According the affidavit for probable cause filed by the Henry County Circuit Court, Renfro was pulled over on I-70 near New Castle on Sunday where he was asked to take a preliminary breath test which registered a .240 blood alcohol content. Renfro was released on bond Tuesday after spending two nights in jail. His initial hearing is set for Aug. 30 in New Castle.
The Indianapolis Colts take on the Buffalo Bills in their preseason opener on Saturday. Head coach Frank Reich said this week that the majority of starters will play about a quarter of the game before the backups takeover to get in-game repetitions. Reich said the only thing that’s not important about preseason games is the final score as the Colts use those weeks leading up to the season to figure out who will make the final roster and get into a rhythm that looks more like a regular season cycle. The most likely example of a star not playing at all is running back Jonathan Taylor as the Colts try to limit his hits and carries before the long season. Kickoff from Buffalo is at 4:00pm on Saturday.  You can follow the Colts all season starting tomorrow night on The Razor 94.5fm WRZR.
Major League Baseball was back in heaven Thursday night. Or was it Iowa?  The Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds met at a ballpark next to the filming location of the iconic 1989 movie “Field of Dreams,” where Ray Kinsella (played by Kevin Costner) built a baseball field in the middle of his cornfields at the direction of a mysterious voice that told him, “If you build it, they will come.”  The Cubs did most of their scoring early in the game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. They never looked back after that, winning the contest 4-2.
The Rockies beat the Cardinals 8 to 6
Royals over the White Sox 5 to 3
The Red Sox topped the Orioles 4 to 3
