The first probable case of monkeypox has been identified in Indiana. The announcement came from the state Dept. of Health, Saturday evening.
The infected person is in isolation and will remain there until they are no longer infectious. No identifying information was provided.
The infection must be confirmed by the CDC.
Symptoms of monkeypox include fever, headaches, chills, and body aches about 5 to 21 days after exposure. Within 1 to 3 days after symptoms begin, the patient develops a rash. The illness lasts from 2 to 4 weeks. Patients are considered infectious until all scabs from the rash have fallen off.
So far 113 people have been infected in 21 states and territories.
