Jail Tax Eliminated

The Daviess County Council passed the ordinance Monday that eliminates the jail tax.
The .25% Special Local Option Income Tax has been on the books for over a dozen years. County Council President Mike Sprinkle says come January 1st, that tax will come off of county residents’ paychecks much earlier than planned…

The vote by 5 Council members at a public hearing was unanimous to end the tax. The council was quick to commend the Daviess County Auditor and Attorney for the extra work they’ve done on the matter.
Sprinkle says the action to remove the tax and pay off the bonds was possible due to several reasons

The day was extra special for Sprinkle as he was one of the main advocates for the creation of the tax when it began.

 The remaining balance in the jail account being paid on the jail is $3,033,000.  Another $9,900 will come out of Riverboat money received by the county.  The tax will continue to be collected through the end of the year, any excess money will go to the highway department.
