On Saturday, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle accident in the 1200 block of VFW Road at approximately 5:30 p.m. The crash involved a 2002 Ford F250, driven by 39-year-old Steven Tillett of Orleans. The investigation revealed that the truck had been traveling northbound at a high speed when it crested a hill, left the roadway on the right side, and then over-corrected, causing the vehicle to skid across the road and roll over in a nearby field. Tillett was ejected from the vehicle during the rollover and was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other occupants in the truck. Witnesses estimated the crash occurred between 2:45 p.m. and 3:45 p.m., but it was not reported until later, as passersby initially believed the vehicle was abandoned. The investigation is ongoing, with toxicology results pending as per state statute.
