The Daviess County Commissioners heard a report on the Courthouse project at Tuesday’s meeting. Commissioners Nathan Gabhart and Ron Arnold did a walk-through inspection of the project last week. Gabhart said the project is still on time and on budget.
The commissioners also approved a CCMG grant application request from the Highway Department. Highway Superintendent Chris Winkler told the commissioners that this year’s Community Crossing Grant request focuses on rehabilitation and safety projects on Old Highway 50 west of Washington and Edwardsport Road. Winkler also discussed the construction inspection on bridge 14 on Old US 50. The bridge rehab is part of the US 50 relinquishment agreement with the state. Winkler also discussed the proposed roundabout at Old 50 and Beer Can Alley. Winkler told the commissioners that a state safety study would require a roundabout at the dangerous intersection, and the state would fund the project. If a roundabout is not used, the upgrades to the intersection will cost the county approximately $3 million, with no state funding to help with the cost. Winkler also asked for approval for a preliminary safety study on St. Mary’s Road and the causeway. The contract was taken under advisement.
In other business, the Commissioners approved West Bogg Park Superintendent Nathan Rihm’s request to add the position of Assistant Superintendent to the park’s staff. Rihm said the position would help supervise staff and contractors, help with public relations, and assist in grant writing. The funding for the position will come from the park’s funds, with no impact on taxpayers.
The commissioners also approved a contract with the Washington Conservation Club to use the building in the coming election. The next commissioner’s meeting is scheduled for August 27.
