Deputy Sheriff, William Richard (Rich) Wirey, passed away at his home in Durango, CO, on May 30, 2024.
 
He was born on August 9, 1962 to Rick and Malinda Wirey of Washington, IN.
 
Survivors of Rich include his parents, Rick and Malinda; his brothers, Mark Wirey and Brett Wirey (deceased); his nephews, Dale Wirey and Josh (Stephine Solorza) Wirey; his niece, Kristen (Joe) Elhoujairy; and his aunts and uncles, Nancy Nixon and Charlie Nixon (deceased), Elaine and Robert Tucker (both deceased), Jerry Ann Jones and Jack Jones (deceased), Ann Wirey, and Gary Wirey (deceased); cousins, Amanda Bjorklund, Andrea Phillips, Jane Simpson, Steve Tucker, Emily Burris, Brad Nixon, Matt Nixon (deceased), LeAnn Wirey, and Gail Graham.
 
Rich graduated from Washington High School in 1981. He graduated from Vincennes University with a degree in Law Enforcement. His grandparents took him to Durango at the age of 13. Rich told them then, “this is where I’m going to live.” He was hired by the La Plata County and San Juan County Sheriff’s Departments in Durango. He proudly worked there for 34 years. A flag was flown over the department for 34 minutes to represent each year he served his community. The flag was presented to his family.
 
A graveside service for Rich will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at Walnut Hill Cemetery, 1108 N Vincennes Ave., in Petersburg, IN 47567 for friends and family. Following the service, he will be laid to rest.
