Starting July 1, 2023, Indiana’s ‘Move Over or Slow Down’ law has undergone revisions for enhanced safety. The amended law now mandates all drivers to either change lanes or reduce speed when approaching a disabled vehicle displaying flashing hazard lights. Initially safeguarding only emergency vehicles, the updated law prohibits stopping, standing, or parking on the interstate unless it’s an emergency. Failure to comply, especially when nearing a disabled vehicle with activated flashers, may result in a class B infraction. This regulation applies to all Indiana roads, including situations where changing lanes might be impractical, such as on two-lane roads. In such cases or on four-lane roads where lane change isn’t safe, drivers can opt to slow down to 10 mph below the speed limit to adhere to the law.
