Early yesterday morning, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fatal crash near Loogootee following a 911 call around 5 AM. The incident occurred on US Highway 50 near Lily Pond Road, just east of Loogootee. A 2020 Freightliner box truck traveling east on US Highway 50 veered off the south side of the roadway, colliding with a guardrail before coming to a halt in a deep ditch. The driver, identified as 62-year-old Gregory M. Monning from Harrison, Ohio, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Martin County Coroner’s Office. Due to the accident, US Highway 50 experienced closures and lane restrictions for several hours to facilitate the cleanup by emergency personnel.
