Investigation Underway Following Severe Burns Incident in Montgomery

On October 12, at 7:41 am, the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from a residence located at 7113 South 350 E in Montgomery, reporting a severely injured individual. Deputies, as well as medical personnel from Daviess Community Hospital, promptly arrived at the scene. Upon their arrival, the deputies discovered Thomas J. Wirts III, 40 years old, with severe burns covering his entire body. The authorities summoned assistance from the Southeast and Veale Fire Districts, in addition to personnel from the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department. Unfortunately, the garage on the property had been completely consumed by the fire. At present, the exact cause and circumstances of the fire remain unclear. Mr. Wirts was quickly transported to Daviess Community Hospital for initial treatment and subsequently transferred to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis for further medical care. The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office has initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the fire and surrounding circumstances.
