Jasper Common Council Approves 1% Food & Beverage Tax for Regional Wellness Center

The Jasper Common Council greenlights a one percent food and beverage tax to support the Regional Wellness Center’s creation. The tax will affect restaurant receipts, deli counters (if served with utensils or ready-to-eat), and catering, adding a one percent increase. Anticipated to launch in January, it’s projected to generate around $495,000 annually. Mayor Dean Vonderheide emphasizes its significance as an initial step toward the wellness center’s realization. The tax helps secure federal loan guarantees, allowing a venture like this. The center’s priority aligns with public input from the Impact Jasper Comprehensive Plan, and verbal commitments have pushed fundraising beyond halfway to the $15 million goal. Ultimately, the food and beverage tax ordinance passed unanimously, fortifying the wellness center’s future.
