Joseph M. “Joe” Kilps, 100, of Washington, passed away on Sunday, August 13, at his home. Joe was one of the few remaining World War II veterans in Daviess County. Joe was just a few weeks short of his 101st birthday. He served in the Army Signal Corps, and during the build-up to the Normandy Invasion, he was part of the decoy “Ghost Army. He also served at the Battle of the Bulge. Joe was the oldest surviving baby born at Daviess Community Hospital. After his retirement, he was a regular volunteer at the hospital. He also volunteered at the Daviess County Museum and gave students touring the museum personal stories about the Ghost Army and World War II. Visitation for Joseph M. Kilps will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16, at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Washington. The Knights of Columbus will pray the Rosary at 7:15 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Joseph M. Kilps at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 17, also at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church. NOTE: This Mass will be livestreamed from the church.
