A major change within the IHSAA could happen this week. The 18-person executive committee is scheduled to vote tomorrow about how teams are classified in the four-class sports of basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball. The proposal would divide schools in those sports by set enrollment numbers rather than dividing them evenly.
If the change happens: Class 4A enrollment of 1,400 and more, 3A from 600-1,399, 2A from 325-599 and Class A as 324 and lower. The reasoning for this proposal has been an increase in charter and private schools in smaller classes pushing others into larger classes despite no enrollment increase.
Here’s how our local teams would be affected:
North Daviess boys basketball. The Cougars would go back to 1A under the new cutoff. Remember, they were supposed to play in 2A this past year and next but elected to compete in 3A instead.
Jasper would no longer compete in 4A for either boys or girls basketball. Heritage Hills (616) and Princeton (596) are currently on either side of the 3A/2A cutline. Southridge (517) would also drop to 2A in basketball, baseball and softball, though the Raiders have flipped between both classes recently.
