The Washington School Board accepted several donations and heard from three student groups in addition to regular business at Thursday’s regular board meeting.
The Board thanked the Tom Boyd family and Farmers Storage Supply for the crane work to remove the old lights at Hatchet Hollow, Memering Farms for removing and disposing of the old light poles, and Indiana Municipal Power Agency for donating $500 to the Hatchet Hollow project. The Board also thanked the Junior Donaldson family, Belt Tech, and NASCO for donations to the Industrial Arts Club, and Lengacher Taxidermy for a donation to the weight room renovation.
Members of the Upper Elementary Robotics team and their coach, Lisa Dinkens, gave a demonstration of their robots. The Upper Elementary Ribotis squad has qualified to compete in the VEX IQ Robotics World Championships to be held in Dallas, Texas, in May. Team members are Molly Marino, Harper Tolbert, Wesson Babrick, Alexander Hannah, and Wyatt Barber. The team is fundraising to help offset the cost of the trip. Over 800 teams from around the world will compete in Dallas.
Board members then heard a report from officers of Washington High School’s FFA and FFA sponsor Hannah Mehringer. Dakota Sullivan, Owen Barber, and Nathan Hirschmann told the board that the 41 members of the WHS FFA chapter had several students place in the recent district competition.
The board also heard from WHS students Citrus Schultz and Karrigan Smillie, who told the board member about the Family Career and Community Leaders organization at WHS.
In regular business, the board appointed Lily Jones as dance team coach, Julie Wadsworth as academic competition coordinator, and Jessica Williams for elementary testing. The Board also made several appointments for this summer’s Kinder Camp and the High Ability Camp (Camp Creation). The Board also received resignations from elementary teacher Mikayla Hatton and high school instructional assistant Aria Espinosa Davilla.
In other business, the board approved the recommendation of a committee consisting of parents and teachers for adopting science textbooks. The board also approved a trip for the chorus to sing before a St. Louis Cardinals game on July 19. The chorus has also invited the WHS band and baseball team to go on the trip. The Board also approved a request for the chorus to sing at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2024. The board also gave official approval for the robotics team to travel to Dallas.
The next regular board meeting will be May 18.
