Mary Kathryn “Katy” (Byrd) Carey

Mary Kathryn “Katy” (Byrd) Carey, 95, passed away at the home of her daughter, Sue Ann Day, on April 13, 2023. She was born in Bicknell, July 10, 1927, to Douglas Newton and Alice Grace (McElroy) Byrd. She married Herbert F. Carey and he has preceded her in death.
A 1945 graduate of Wheatland High School, Katy was a long-time resident of Wheatland where she was a member of the Wheatland United Methodist Church. She later attended Bartlett Chapel Methodist Church in Avon. Katy was retired from Williams Pharmacy in Washington where she was a bookkeeper for many years. She loved to quilt, do crossword puzzles, play Sudoku, and enjoyed reading – especially mysteries.
Those who mourn Katy’s passing include her children: Richard (Patricia) Carey of Ooltewah, Tennessee; Sandra Bradley of Indianapolis; Sue Ann (David) Day of Plainfield; and daughter-in-law, Penny Carey of Avon. She was blessed with five grandchildren: Brian, Amanda, Kathryn, Katy and Clay; and three great-grandchildren: Alexis, Trinity and Gracie. Katy also leaves many beloved nieces and nephews as well as several dear friends.
During her lifetime, Katy mourned the loss of her parents, Douglas and Alice Grace Byrd; her husband, Herbert F. Carey; son, Darrin Carey; siblings: Wanda Rasner; Doris Neukam; Douglas “Bill” Byrd; and Gerald Byrd.
Visitation for Mary Kathryn Carey will be held 4:00-8:00 pm, Friday, April 21, 2023, at the Ed L. Lee Mortuary, 620 East Viola Avenue, Washington, Indiana.
Funeral services for Mary Kathryn Carey will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, April 22, at the Ed L. Lee Mortuary, 620 East Viola Avenue, Washington, Indiana. Pastor Jarrod Chattin will officiate. Burial will follow in the Wheatland Cemetery.
