A familiar voice for college basketball is retiring from a longtime position. Jim Nantz will step away from calling the NCAA men’s basketball tournament after next year and will be succeeded by Ian Eagle.
CBS Sports confirmed the move Monday night. It was first reported by the New York Post. Nantz has been a part of the CBS coverage of the tournament since 1986. Next year’s Final Four will take place in Houston, 40 years after Nantz’s alma mater the University of Houston’s run to the national championship game before it was upset by North Carolina State. The 63-year old Nantz will remain the lead voice of the network’s NFL coverage, along with leading its golf team. CBS has The Masters and PGA Championship.
Brittney Griner loses appeal in Russian court and the jailed American basketball star has exhausted the last of her legal options on Tuesday. If is going to return to the U.S. anytime soon, it almost certainly will happen via a prisoner exchange. A Moscow regional court upheld Griner’s August conviction on charges of drug possession and drug smuggling with criminal intent. The court rejected arguments from Griner’s defense attorneys that her nine-year prison sentence was excessive and unjustified under Russian law. Her sentence calls for her to be transferred to a penal colony, where conditions can be more brutal and inmates are required to perform labor during their sentence. There are hundreds of penal colonies in Russia, many of them scattered across Siberia. Griner’s attorneys are expected to ask for her to be sent somewhere close to Moscow so that they can maintain contact with her, but the final decision will not be theirs.

The Indianapolis Colts today signed punter Nolan Cooney to the practice squad and released cornerback Ryan Smith from the practice squad. Cooney, 6-3, 202 pounds, has spent time with the Arizona Cardinals (2022) and New Orleans Saints (2021) but has not seen game action. He was originally signed by the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2021. Collegiately, Cooney played in 36 career games at Syracuse and compiled a 44.8 avg with 24 punts pinned inside the 20-yard line. He earned All-America and All-ACC honors as a senior in 2020.
