Lincoln Memorial Bridge in Vincennes to Close for Repairs

The Lincoln Memorial Bridge over the Wabash River in Vincennes will be closed for repairs from January through April of next year. The Indiana Department of Transportation says that beginning January 9, the historic bridge will be closed to traffic. The closure will allow the National Park Service to perform repair and maintenance on the bridge. When the bridge was built in 1932, the large façade stones were attached using wrought iron. The iron, along with the stones have deteriorated over the 90 year life of the bridge. The bridge, marks the location where the Thomas Lincoln family, including his 21 year old son, Abraham, the future President, migrated from Indiana to Illinois in 1830. The bridge, formerly the route of U.S. 50, remains a major route between Vincennes and nearby Illinois communities. The bridge closure is scheduled to continue through the end of April, 2023.
