Frederick “Fred” Eugene Baker

Frederick “Fred” Eugene Baker, 85, laid his working hands to rest at 9:03 am on Thursday, August, 29, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. Fred was a beloved son, brother, husband, grandfather, great grandfather and friend of many. He was born November 15, 1938 to Leo J. and Helen (Allen) Baker. He graduated from Washington Catholic High School in 1956, the President of his class. He joined the United States Navy later that fall. Fred married Patricia L. Hammett on January 19, 1974, spending the next 50 years loving each other and serving God.
Fred dedicated his working years to serving others faithfully. He retired as a mail clerk at the United States Postal Service, while also sharing his talents in carpentry, lending his skills to various contractors and projects. Fred’s passion for serving the Lord was exemplified in the 40+ years he spent laboring at his favorite place on earth Camp Illiana.
Throughout his life, he touched the hearts of many with his kindness, hard work, and willingness to lend a helping hand wherever needed. Always keeping in mind Colossians 3:23.
Fred leaves behind his loving wife, Patricia Baker of Washington; sons, Lee Baker and his wife Mary of Bloomington, IN, Scott Baker and his wife Stacy of North Carolina John Wilson and his wife Jackie of O’Fallon, MO; his grandchildren, Megan Baker, Chelsey Hart and her husband Justin, Nicholas Baker and his wife Lauren, McKenzie Baker, Sabrina Cherry and her husband Alan, David Baker, Rebecca Baker, Samuel Baker, Jacob Wilson, Tyler Wilson and his wife Toni, Jennifer (Wade) Andrews and her husband Eric, Jordan Wade; his great grandchildren, Serenity, Willow, Echo, Declan, Wynn, Ali, Layni, Brayden, Bryant and Caroline.. Fred is preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Helen Baker; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Steve Datin and his daughter, Beth (Wilson) Wade.
Without a doubt “Poppy” will be received by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, with the words “Well done, My good and faithful servant.”
Friends may visit with Fred’s family from 4-8 pm on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home, 2020 State St., Washington, IN 47501 and from 10:00 am until the hour of service time of 11:00 am Thursday at the funeral home. Pastors’s Ron Raymond and Tom Watson will officiate and Fred will be laid to rest in Bethany Cemetery. The Baker family has requested memorial contributions be made to Camp Illiana, 723 E. 450 S., Washington, IN 47501. Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home is privileged and honored to be entrusted with the care of Fred and his family.
