The courthouse renovation was the main topic of business for the Daviess County Council Wednesday morning. The money for the project was all in place but had to be transferred from six separate sources and appropriated to the Courthouse Renovation Fund. All tolled, the Council appropriated approximately $13,730,000 for the renovation. The only other items approved by the Council were an additional appropriation of $400 for longevity pay in the Maintenance Department and $6,446 in grant funds received by the Clerk’s Office for voter registration expenses. A request from Adult Protective Services for an additional $1,000 was tabled for more information.
The Council also heard Sheriff Gary Allison’s annual report. The sheriff reported that deputies had responded to 6,823 calls, worked 485 accidents, and four fatalities. Allison said that on average, 157 people were incarcerated at the security center. The Security Center served 177,837 meals during the year, and deputies traveled 40,830 miles transporting prisoners. The Sheriff also reported that, with the closing of the Southwest Youth Village in Vincennes, the closest place to take juveniles is now Johnson County.
The next County Council meeting will be held on March 13 at 8:15 a.m. in the Government Center.
