Indiana is preparing for a surge of eclipse enthusiasts as the state gets ready to witness the first total solar eclipse in seven years on Monday, April 8. With nearly 4 million Hoosiers living within the path of totality and hundreds of thousands expected to visit Indiana, INDOT and ISP are urging drivers to plan ahead for potential travel impacts. To ensure a smooth trip, drivers are advised to research their viewing site, check traffic conditions using INDOT TrafficWise, plan for increased traffic, buckle up, and put their phones down while driving. During the eclipse, drivers should avoid travel if possible, exit the roadway to view the eclipse safely, and refrain from taking photos or videos while driving. After the eclipse, drivers should plan their post-event transportation, exercise patience, and clean up after themselves. INDOT will limit road closures and restrictions where possible and suspend oversize and overweight permits during this time.
