Robert A. Igel

Robert A. Igel, 91, passed away December 31, 2023, while at the Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, August 13, 1932, to Nelson and Catherine (Donovan) Igel. He married Mary Anne (Litwiler) Igel on October 29, 1955, and for the next sixty-eight years, they created a loving home for their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Robert was a 1950 graduate of Washington Catholic High School. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. He owned and operated the Washington Printing Company, was the local coordinator for the Salvation Army, and worked at Buehler’s Buylow during his retirement years. Robert was an avid bowler and a loyal fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. But, he was happiest when spending time with his family. He was a member of the Washington Knights of Columbus and a 4th Degree member of the Father Vieck Assembly. He was a devoted member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church.
Those who now mourn Robert’s passing include his wife, Mary Anne Igel; his children: Kevin (Clara) Igel of Evansville, David (Vicki) Igel of Evansville, Andrew (Diana) Igel of Washington, Mary Igel of Greenwood, Candy (Terry) Conolty of Washington and Danny (Tonya) Igel of Lafayette. Robert was blessed with twenty grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren. Additionally, he leaves a sister, Jane Grannan of Fort Worth, Texas.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Catherine and Nelson Igel; a granddaughter, Kristen Fleckenstein; and a brother, Jack Igel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105-9959, or the Washington Catholic Education Endowment at PO Box 916, Washington, Indiana 47501.
Visitation for Robert A. Igel will be held 4:00-8:00 pm, Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at the Ed L. Lee Mortuary, 620 East Viola Avenue, Washington, Indiana.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am, Thursday, January 4, 2024, at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, 315 NE 3rd Street, Washington, Indiana. Father Paul Ferguson and Father Lowell Will are the co-celebrants. Burial will follow in the St. John Cemetery.
