Daviess County Commissioners Address Mine Reclamation and Infrastructure Delays

daviess-county-5

The Daviess County Commissioners met Tuesday morning with a short agenda. Commissioner Michael Taylor was absent. County Highway Superintendent Chris Winkler reported on the reclamation process for the abandoned coal mine on County Road 700 E. The project is waiting on the state to finish reclamation of a mine in Dubois County. Winkler also told the commissioners that there was a delay in getting state permits for the construction of the new salt barn. Winkler said it will now be the end of February or early March before it is completed.
In other business, the Commissioners approved a contract for aerial view photography for the Assessors Office, signed a letter of intent for the multi-hazard mitigation plan grant, and reviewed the lists of appointments and not-for-profit organization requests. The commissioners also opened bids for the proposed EMS building for ambulance crews to be built east of the hospital. The bids were taken under advisement.
The Commissioners approved a request from County Clerk Lauren Milton to approve a gated area in the basement of the Government Center to provide a secure storage area for the county’s record books during the relocation caused by the Courthouse renovation. Commissioner Nathan Gabhart reported that he hopes that the courthouse offices will be able to move sometime in January, so work can begin on the project. Gabhart also said that they are still looking at the renovation’s soft cost as a way to pare down the overall cost of the project.
