12-Year-Old Hero Saves Family as Fire Consumes Home

Birdseye, IN – A quick-thinking 12-year-old boy, Dylan Bateson, became a hero when he saved his family after their home was engulfed in flames on Thursday evening. According to the Dubois County Free Press, Meagan and Matthew Bateson had left their three children, including an 8-year-old and a 6-year-old, in the care of their eldest, Dylan, while they assisted a friend. Unfortunately, their car broke down shortly after leaving, leaving them stranded. Dylan sprang into action upon discovering the house was on fire. He evacuated his younger siblings, rescued the family’s pets, including a dog and two cats, and even managed to grab his school backpack and Chromebook before the situation worsened. Dylan then sought help from a neighbor, David Fischer, who serves on the St. Anthony Volunteer Fire Department. Fischer immediately called 911, and the fire department responded swiftly. Chief Craig Englert of the Birdseye Volunteer Fire Department reported that the fire at 30 Poplar Street was called in at approximately 10:09 p.m., with firefighters on the scene by 10:16 p.m. However, the fire had already fully engulfed the home. It took 18 firefighters, two pumper trucks, and a tanker to bring the blaze under control. An additional tanker truck from Schnellville was summoned to assist. The Batesons home is considered a total loss. The family has been forced to move between different hotels with their pets, making it challenging to find accommodations. The Batesons are now seeking a solution for housing, with Mr. Bateson considering the purchase of an RV to place on the property. They are open to any assistance or leads on camper or recreational vehicle purchases, which can be directed to them at 812-202-2648 or by email at meaganb0123@icloud.com.
