Forest Service Proposes Tornado-Damaged Tree Harvest and Stream Restoration in Martin County

The Forest Service has proposed a plan to address recent tornado damage in Martin County. The proposal involves salvaging damaged timber across a 193-acre area of the Hoosier National Forest. The objectives include reducing hazardous fuels, removing trees posing risks to roads and private lands, promoting natural forest regrowth, enhancing the area’s aesthetics, and creating local job opportunities. Additionally, the project aims to restore stream flow and prevent flooding caused by blockages resulting from the tornado. The Forest Service expects to make a decision on the project in the coming fall, with implementation to follow shortly. The public is invited to comment on the proposal until October 17 via email at comments-eastern-hoosier@usda.gov or by mailing comments to Chris Thornton, District Ranger, Brownstown Ranger District, Attn: Blue Creek Salvage and Stream Restoration Project, 248 15th Street, Tell City, IN 47586.
