Severe Storm and Tornados Causes Damage, Power Outages, and One Death in Martin County

Damage reports are still coming in, but a big storm came through parts of southern Indiana yesterday. The biggest impact was felt in the Crane and Bloomfield areas, as well as Shoals and Odon in northern Daviess County, and a touchdown was reported in Greenwood and northern Daviess County. Quarter-size hail fell in the Washington area. The West Baden Hotel reported damage to the glass dome, with small holes left in the glass dome ceiling following the hail. The hotel remains open, but the atrium has been closed until further notice. Power Outages were reported in all the storm areas. Daviess-Martin REMC issued a statement last night saying crews are continuing to work but will not be able to get all power restored right away. Some areas in the Martin County area are severely damaged and will require major work to be restored. As of right now, they are looking at late today and possibly early Tuesday before everything can be completed. The crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to get everyone restored. Several roads were closed due to fallen trees. Do not try to travel through blocked roadways. Cleanup will get underway today. Martin County Emergency Management Director Cameron Wolf says that most of the damage was in the rural part of Martin County.

Wolf said that one person has died in Martin County, and their spouse was flown to a hospital from injuries sustained in the storm. The two-story log cabin home they resided in was totally destroyed. No names have been released at this time. Yesterday was a reminder of how quickly these storms can arrive in the summer months. Please stay safe.
