Today is Juneteenth, marking the end of slavery in the U.S. in 1865. It is also known as Freedom Day. June 19th was the day in 1865 when General Gordon Granger announced that all enslaved people were free. President Biden made it a national holiday in 2021. Federal offices, courts, post offices, and banks are closed today. The City of Washington and Daviess County offices will be open today.
