Winter Storm Warnings for Christmas Weekend

The major news across the country is the large winter storm that is beginning to enter the WAMW listening area.   Light sporadic rain began to fall in the area around 3 a.m. this morning.  Forecasts call for rain most of the day making road surfaces wet.   Temperatures will reach a high of around 40 degrees and around 4 p.m. the temperature will plummet to below zero.  The quick drop in temperature will cause roadways and paved surfaces to be come icy and slippery.  Snow will begin tonight with widespread blowing snow mainly between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m. tonight.  The temperature will fall into the negative numbers with wind chill as low as 28. Winds will be around 20 miles per hour with gust of 40 mph.  Accumulating snow will continue to be blown by the wind into Friday morning, with actual air temperature reaching a high of 6 on Friday.  The wind will continue most of the day and into Friday night.  Saturday will be sunny and cold with a high of around 13 degrees.  Christmas day will be sunny with a high of around 17 degrees.   This winter storm with its low temperatures, high winds, and blowing snow is dangerous and frostbite can occur to exposed skin.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Department has issued the following advisory”  We are sure that you are very aware of the inclement weather approaching our  area for the next few days.  We are asking all residents and travelers to exercise caution when traveling.   Continue to monitor our Facebook page for updates on travel conditions and road closures.
Please keep in mind that due to increased call volume and weather related issues response time may be extended.  We will do our best to provide service in a timely and safe manner.
We also suggest doing a few things to help us assist you with a safe response.
1.) Please do not travel without an emergency kit in your vehicle.  This can include a blanket, coats, hats, gloves, scarves, a small first aide kit for minor issues, a snack , bottled water, and your medications in case you are not home on time for any timed medications.
2.) Please do not travel in areas known to be hazardous during weather issues.
3.) Please do not postpone a request for assistance as response times may vary due to increased call time and road conditions.
4.)If possible post-pone or cancel unnecessary trips until weather permits.
5.) Remember to use 911 for emergent calls only, for all other calls you may contact us at 812-247-3726.
Travel between 4pm and 10pm Thursday should be emergency only. There will be wind gusts up to 35-45 mph that will result in blizzard visibility. Please plan accordingly.
