Daviess County Council Approves Aid to Economic Expansion

The Daviess County Council began the process to help a major area industry with a significant expansion.   Grain Processing Corporation, in the process of adding a significan multi-million dollar expansion to its facilities west of Washington, presented a request for a structured tax abatement for the expansion.  The abatement would be structured differently than normal abatements with a 30% abatement in years 1, 2, and 3.  A abatement of 50% in years 4 through 8, and a 90% abatement in the final two years.   The abatement would not cover any current property or values.  After discussion, the Council voted 6-0 to proceed with the declaratory resolution.  The confirmatory resolution for the abatement will came before the Council at its next meeting,   GPC says that the new facility will bring up to 16 new jobs to the area with salaries of between $47,000 and $90,000 per year.
In other business, the Council voted 5-1 to approve a salary ordinance amendment moving funds not used by one position to the Prosecutor’s bonus fund,  Councilman Tom Schaffer opposed the a amendment.  Councilman Mike Myers was absent,
The Council also approved amendments restructuring the bi-weekly pay dpfkr the Health Department Coordinator, and bumping up the salary of a parting Helath Department employee since she will be working more hours.  Also approved was a transfer of $300 in the Circuit Court budget from the Psychiatric Services account to the telephone account.  The Council also placed $ 1 million received from a Community Crossings grant in the cumulative bridge fund to pay for work on the overhead bridge in Montgomery.
