George Franklin Gumbel

George Franklin Gumbel, 77, of Petersburg, IN passed away September 18 in Newburgh, IN. He was born January 27, 1945 in Mt. Vernon, IN to Arthur P. and Mary Ann (Pennington) Gumbel. He was a graduate of Mt. Vernon High School Class of 1963. He served in the National Guard as a Cannoneer. George spent his life proudly working on his family farm in Mt. Vernon. He was a proud member of the White River Chapel Church in Bowman, past member of the 4-H Council, and member of Farm Bureau. George loved to go camping and loved to fish, as long as he was catching them. He has been best described as a “simple man who loved the land”.
George is survived by his wife, Judith E. (Kinman) Wood Gumbel; sons, Geoffrey J. (Susan) Wood and David M. Wood; grandchildren, Michael (Andrea) Wood, Mallory (Nicholas) Terry, D.J. (Valerie) Wood, and Travis (Vicki) Wood; grandchildren, Addison Crum, Kinnley Crum, Liam Terry, Elliot Terry, Harper Wood, Knox Wood, Crew Wood, and Ella Jo Wood; sisters-in-law Bonnie (David) Weathers and Carla (Greg) Willis, nieces and nephews, Tammy (Mike)Johnson, Teresa Lugo, Nathan (Samantha) Willis, Tom (Ashley) Willis, Kinsey (Trent) Barrett, Brook (Jim) Strahle, and Brian Weathers and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
George is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Albert L. Gumbel; sister, Wilma Ruth Williams; and grandson, Matthew Robert Wood.
A graveside service will be held at 2 PM EST on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Campbelltown, IN. Pastor Jeff Pinney will be officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations please be made to the Pike County 4H Council and may be mailed to 801 E. Main St. Petersburg, IN 47567 or White River Chapel c/o Harris Funeral Home. Harris Funeral Home is entrusted with care.
