A good night of  local sports on Monday, and let’s start with golf, where the Washington Lady Hatchets golf team competed in the PAC conference championships at Country Oaks. This was a make up of a rain out last Saturday and was reduced to a nine-hole event. Gibson Southern came out on top in the event and Washington Channey Clark placed fourth and received all conference honors. It was one of the Hatchets’ better rounds of the season and they are picking up momentum heading into Saturday’s  Sectional. Maddie Dalton also had a stellar round with a 46, and the Lady Hatchets placed fourth as a team in the conference meet.
Let’s look at tennis, where the Washington Hatchets played host to the red-hot North Daviess Cougars and it was North Daviess that came away with a 5 to 0 victory behind the senior leadership of #1 singles player Jaylen Mullen.

The junior high volleyball teams traveled to Jasper Monday. 7th grade lost in straight sets and drop to 4-3 on the season. The 8th grade dropped a close 3 set match and now stands at 5-2.  Both teams play at home Tuesday against Princeton.
According to coach Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame starting quarterback Tyler Buchner will miss the next four months with a sprained AC joint that will require surgery. The injury, suffered during the fourth quarter of the Fighting Irish’s 26-21 loss to Marshall, will likely keep Buchner out for the remainder of the 2022 season. As a result, Drew Pyne has been elevated to make his first career start ahead of Notre Dame’s Week 3 game against Cal. After exiting the game against the Thundering Herd late in the fourth quarter following a 4-yard run, With Notre Dame down 11 points, Pyne entered and threw a red zone interception just two plays later to ice the game. The shocking upset dropped the Fighting Irish to 0-2 for the first time since 2011.
