INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Federal officials say the man behind a nationwide senior romance scam has been sentenced.

Edwin Agbi has been sentenced to five years in federal prison, says the Department of Justice.

Agbi was convicted on several charges, including mail fraud and money laundering. Investigators say several packages containing cash were delivered to Agbi’s home. Each has $75,000 inside.

The scheme involved scammers creating fake profiles on an online dating website for adults over 50. They tricked seniors into having a genuine relationship online and then would request money to help pay taxes and travel expenses.

Agbi’s role was to receive the money from the victims at his home in Indianapolis, keep some for himself, and give the rest to his partners.

The Secret Service and Postal Inspection Services investigated the case.
