For the first time in three years, Alexander Rossi makes a trip back to victory lane at the Gallagher Grand Prix from Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Rossi qualified in second behind Felix Rosenqvist for Saturday’s road course race at IMS and led 44 laps, the final 44. After the race, Rossi said quote, “it’s a relief, man…I’m thankful something finally came our way. Shoutout to Andretti Autosport in their continued belief.” The good fortune Rossi alluded to was Colton Herta’s mechanical issues that brought his day to a premature end after leading 17 laps early in the race. Late in the race the Andretti driver never saw his lead drop within 2.5 seconds as he ended his 49-race winless streak. At the top of the season standings, Will Power’s third place finish vaulted him into the points lead ahead of Indy 500 winner Marcus Ericsson. Power has seven podium finishes this year and 10 total top five placements giving him a nine-point advantage over Ericsson. Josef Newgarden sits 23 points behind second in third place with Scott Dixon and Pato O’Ward rounding out the top five in the standings.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway was the center of the motor sports world this weekend hosting three races at 16th and Georgetown. After Alexander Rossi’s win early Saturday afternoon in the Gallagher Grand Prix, two stock car races took to the course. AJ Allmendinger won the Penzoil 150 on the road course leading 42 laps from the pole position cruising to his third win of the season. Only Ty Gibbs has more race wins in the series this season. In very similar fashion, the Verizon 200 pole winner went on to win the race on Sunday. Tyler Reddick started on pole and led 38 laps on his way to his second victory of the season. He’s one of six drivers with multiple wins on the season and currently sits in fifth in the Cup Series standings. A race that looked like it would end in a straight forward manner saw two late restarts force Reddick to hold off pushes from multiple drivers to secure the victory.
