The Indiana Pacers welcomed Big Ten Player of the Year Johnny Davis to Indianapolis on Tuesday for a pre-draft workout. Davis averaged just seven points per game as a freshman on a very experienced Wisconsin team before exploding onto the national scene when given more responsibility last season. Davis finished the year averaging 19.7 points and 8.2 rebounds earning consensus all-american honors and the Big Ten’s highest individual award. Davis is one of several projected lottery picks to visit Indianapolis as the Pacers own the sixth pick in this year’s NBA draft a week from Thursday.
21 years after the most recent St. Louis Cardinals no-hitter, Miles Mikolas was one strike away from that very feat before Cal Mitchell doubled with two outs in the ninth inning on a 2-2 count. Mikolas struck out six batters, walking just one and threw 129 pitches, the most of his career in one outing. On the offensive side, the Cardinals scored seven runs in the first two frames tallying 14 hits. The first four hitters in the St. Louis order combined for 13 of those hits going a combined 13-for-19 driving in all nine runs.
The Chicago Cubs scored five runs in the first five innings of Tuesday’s game against the Padres. The Padres were held scoreless through the first five frames. Then, the San Diego offense exploded for 10 runs in two innings before they added two more in the last two innings to beat the Cubs 12-5. Wilson Contreras sent a pair over the walls of Wrigley Field driving in three runs but the offensive disappeared for Chicago in the final four innings. The Cubs are now on an 8-game losing streak. Across that nearly two week span, they have been outscored 65-21 by opponents and given up 12 runs or more on three different occasions.
